Volunteering

Accommodation

The Volunteer House is located in Teshie, Accra, in a welcoming and safe neighborhood. It features two dormitories—one for girls and one for boys—as well as a private room. There are two shared bathrooms available for volunteers. The house includes a shared kitchen, living room, and a terrace, all of which can be freely used by volunteers.

The kitchen is equipped with essential appliances, including a stove, fridge, and microwave. Additional amenities include a washing machine, an iron, and a television for leisure. Each room is fitted with fans to ensure comfort in the warm climate. Our cooking and cleaning staff are available to make your stay more comfortable.

Food

Three meals a day are included in your stay at the Volunteer House, every day of the week, including weekends. Meals are prepared by the cooking staff, but you are also free to use the kitchen to prepare your own food if desired.

  • Breakfast: Served from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM. If you need special timing, this can be arranged.
  • Lunch: Usually served around 12:00 PM, after returning from the volunteer project. Timing can be adjusted if needed.
  • Dinner: Served at approximately 7:00 PM.

In addition, we provide drinking water in the form of water bottles. If you wish to explore local cuisine, we can assist you in finding restaurants or food stalls in the area.

Living Conditions in Ghana

Ghana is known for its rich culture, delicious food, and warm, welcoming people. By volunteering with us, you’ll have the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic daily life of Ghanaians.

However, life in Ghana may differ significantly from what you are accustomed to in your home country. Here are some important points to keep in mind:

  • Water: There is no running water in the sink or shower. Clean water is provided in buckets for washing and other needs. This water is not drinkable; however, water bottles for drinking are provided for all volunteers.
  • Laundry: Occasionally, there is running water on Tuesday evenings, allowing you to use the washing machine. Alternatively, there is a nearby laundry service where you can wash your clothes.
  • Electricity: While electricity is generally reliable, occasional power outages can occur. These typically last a few minutes to a few hours.
  • Transportation: Uber is a popular and affordable option among volunteers but public transportation is also available.

Security

The house is located in a friendly neighbourhood where people help each other and are kind. It is safe to walk around to do small groceries. The house is equipped with a fence around the house and there is a dog inside the house keeping the house all day. The gate is locked during the day/night for security reasons.

Volunteer requirements

Volunteers need to be 18 years or over to participate on this program.

  • Visa: To come to Ghana you need a visa. You can go to a ghananian embassy in your country. It can vary between 80€-200€ depending on the time you have to get the visa. It can take up to 4 weeks if the embassy is slow so apply in good time before coming. In some cases, you can buy a visa at your port of entry into Ghana but this will cost more money. After you have applied we will give you the relevant documents and advice for the visa.
  • Insurance: Your safety is important to us. That's why you're required to obtain appropriate travel and medical insurance that will cover you for the entire duration of your project and travels abroad. Your travel insurance policy must include emergency medical including repatriation, personal accident, personal liability and loss of baggage. If you have any questions about obtaining insurance, Eben will be on hand to offer advice as part of your pre-departure process
  • Vaccination: We advise you to consult your GP or health center for up-to-date information about vaccinations. Since we are not medical experts, our advice on vaccinations and other medical matters can only be informal. There is a requirement of having the yellow fever to enter Ghana. Other vaccinations are recommendations but not obligatory.

The cost of the program is 1500GHS per week, which is approximately $100 or 90€.
